The Lord is My Professor

Extracted from "Disciple's Prayer Life, Walking in Fellowship with God" by T W Hunt & Catherine Walker

A highly personal version of Psalm 23:

The Lord is my Professor;
I shall not lack knowledge of God.
He makes me understand His ways;
He leads me into refreshing new insights.
He restores my mind;
He leads me in an understanding of holiness for the sake of His glory;
Yes, though I walk in an age of dangerous untruth,
I will fear no evil; for You are with me;
Your Spirit and Your Book they reassure me.
You prepare a curriculum before me in the presence of my detractors;
You anoint my mind with glory;
My notebook overflows!
Surely wisdom and knowledge shall fill me all the days of my life,
And I shall sit at the feet of my Teacher forever!

Using the outline above, you can compose your own Psalm 23, expressing who God is in your life and how He has cared for you.

Reflections on Prayer and Fast Week

By Yuhan

Prayer and fast week was a refreshing experience for me, especially during one of the busiest times of the semester. There was a sense of anticipation as the beginning of the week drew closer, and I was excited to see how God would speak to me and work in my life.

Although I have fasted before, this was the first time that I fasted together with a community of believers. I also told my family and a few close friends. I realised that knowing that there are others fasting and praying at the same time, as well as having people around me know of my commitment helped me to stay true to it more easily than when I fasted alone. I thank God that I was able to be disciplined during the 8 days of fasting, and to rely on Him for strength. Indeed, there were many points of time when I felt like my productivity in work was compromised and my brain couldn't work properly, and I had to keep asking Him to help me last the day. The line "主是我力量" (Lord, You are my strength) from a Chinese praise song came to my head quite a lot that week.

I would also like to express my thanks to the P comm people who put together the guide for Prayer and Fast week. God spoke to me through the devotionals and the articles. It was quite apt that I had just studied the story of Daniel in the lion's den recently in Bible study, and one of the points we noted was how Daniel prayed three times a day. Having something to read and meditate on each morning, noon and night reminded me of Daniel and how He sought God first and depended on Him daily (interestingly enough, the text in Daniel 6 was also used in Thursday's devotional).

All in all, I came through the week amazed at how God not only sustained me, but also changed me. It may have been just a little change, but I believe that as I continue to seek Him and atune my heart to His, the transformation will continue, slowly, gently, but surely.

Prayer Can Be...

A Poem by Gwynnyth Gibson

Prayer can be as quiet,
As a falling petal,
Fragrant as a flower,
But strong as metal.

Prayer can be a crying,
As in Gethsemane,
And He who heard His Son, the Christ,
Will He not hear me?

Prayer can be the music,
Of His song divine,
The miracle of harmony,
His counterpart with mine.

And always to the Spirit-fed,
Prayer can bring the Living Bread.

Metamorphosis: The Many Reasons on Why You Should Go

What are the reasons? Just hear from those who experienced it previously and/or convicted by God to go for this year's Meta!

Terence Koh
Meta 06 was three years ago for me but was significantly a spiritual marker in my journey with God. I remember vividly of one of the keynote sessions where the speaker was preaching about spriritual growth and the Christian journey. He projected an overview picture depicting a Christian's growth process. And he added that many or most Christians would get past the first few stages of knowing Christ, learning basic Christian disciplines like prayer and devotional time with God, and even serving in Church. But he stressed that few moved on to the next stage of discipling others; and much lesser would decide to submit to the Lordship of Christ and be willing to even go to the mission field. What struck me the most was his challenge for us to truly consider what we treasure in life and whether we would be willing to submit to Christ out of love and obedience. God has always stirred within me a desire for Him and it was that very night in which i made a decision to say to my precious Lord that "God, i surrender my life to You, because You are worth it and following You is the BEST for me." That prayer stuck with me even till now. I'm excited to go for Meta 09, not because I receive the same experience but because i want to carve out time to enjoy what He has installed for me through the speakers and equipping sessions. I've signed up ... have YOU???

Nigel Ho
I remembered two things that happened during Meta. One of them was the time when Claire, the SMU CCC SC, was interviewed. I was attracted to her eyes, because I saw eyes that have a vision, a vision that is greater than herself. It is not often that one can see a visionary person. That was the vision that God has placed in her and she persevered in fulfilling that vision in SMU. Recently, I was attracted, not by a pair of eyes, but a mouth, a mouth that is always filled with words of passion. That mouth belongs to Siming. I could see from these two people that they are on fire for God and I wanted to have God's vision in my life too.

The second thing that happened was Project X. We actually went out to all parts of Singapore to share the gospel with people on the streets. That opened my eyes beyond just campus evangelism. We actually went to a bigger harvest field! I remembered that I talked to two Catholics and a Muslim family and that was an experience that I would never forget as we sat at the outside of Takashimaya and just talked for hours!

I don't know if there's anything that is stopping you from going for Meta, may it be the cost or other reasons such as your heart and life being not right with God. I will like to share with you the illustration of the metamorphosis of a caterpillar into a butterfly. Everyone knows a caterpillar is a pest which eats leaves and spoils crops. No one likes the caterpillar. On the contrary, butterflies are so beautiful that people want to catch them. When a caterpillar changes into a butterfly in a cocoon, the transformation is not smooth at all as the butterfly struggles out of the cocoon. It will wriggle many times before it finally opens up its wings. We were like the caterpillar before we knew Christ, and we had many struggles. But now we are transformed into butterflies, which are pollinators of flowering plants. They help plants to bear fruit!

So similarly, we are also messengers of God's word and wherever we go, the place will bear fruit! We must remember we are God's workmanship. As the Meta publicity comm claims the verses from Ephesians 2:8-10, we must remember it's God who saves us by grace and has called us His workmanship, who are built to last and to do the good works He has planned in advance for us to do. We must know our identity in Christ, and then the Meta conference can equip us with the skills to know how we can run the Christian race of faith. Or else, the conference will just be another conference and the impact and transformation may never come into your life.

Angelina Koh
The first time i went for Metamorphosis was at the end of Year 1. At that time, I was just curious to see that it was like, because my SM said this "Meta is really cool! [It is] a great time of studying God's Word and fellowshipping with crusaders from other campuses. You should go for it and experience for yourself how cool it is, then you'll understand what I mean!"

Indeed, Meta was an enriching time. There I saw the unity in the body of Christ, as crusaders from the other universities, polytechnics and JCs came together to worship and study God's word. It was also then, that I got to know other crusaders outside my DG. This was also when I started feeling more belonged to the community, and saw that there are so many others running this race together with me.

Meta was a rest point for me, a time to re-charge and align myself back to God's purpose, before I started the second semester in NUS. This year, I'm really looking forward to the Ministry Equipping Packages to learn about the ways we can share our faith in different settings like through sports, movies, and internet. Think it's really interesting to share through these ways! And not forgetting the workshops, where we learn what it means to be a resilient Christian in different settings. It's another step to build deeper into our walk with God (:

So come for Metamorphosis, and experience it for yourselves, then you'll understand what I mean!

The first Christian conference that I’ve attended was metamorphosis. Recalling the fond memories of Meta 2007 when I was a year 2 student back then… The long school semester with its stress and busyness made me feel weary and tired, and I struggled to cope with my academics and ministry. I went for Meta 07 wanting to have a renewed passion and excitement for Christ and to Know Christ at a deeper, more intimate level. That three days set aside focused on God were invaluable in my Christian journey, besides hearing the Word of God through gifted speakers, I really enjoyed the worship sessions, the community of crusaders and unhurried time with God. I have been really blessed by God during Meta, it felt good to belong to the bigger community of believers, not having external influences, but in a safe environment to share my thoughts, thanksgivings, struggles etc in a smaller group. From the Word of God through the mouth of the speaker then, Dave Park, I was reminded of who God is, and who I am in Christ and I left Meta challenged to be a Real Christian, to be someone who truly follows Jesus. (FYI the theme for Meta 07 was Real Christians, Real World) Meta 09 themed Geared to Last is definitely a platform not to miss out, and I believe that God will similarly do immeasurably more than what you can ask or imagine through this conference! Hope to see ya there =)

I never thought that I’d ever want go for Campus Crusade’s Metamorphosis – in fact for most of the academic year of 2008/2009, I’ve been shunning the dreadful question, “So are you going for this year’s Meta 09?”. Frankly speaking, I really hate camps – yes, granted there’s fellowship; yes, there’s also the mighty word of God; and yes, there’re always precious lessons that etch into my living memory.

But yet, I am someone who really needs his five minutes’ worth of peace and quiet every single day – and trust me when I say I really hate camps. I really do. And after having miraculously attended this year’s Freshmen Orientation Camp and ACTS Camp, I was really reluctant to go for another camp. Need I say more about how much I loathe camps?

Sometimes life just doesn’t turn out the way I want it to – just a month ago, Xiao Jun called me up to ask whether I was willing to help out in the Metamorphosis publicity for the Science region, and I clearly recalled Nigel saying the committee needed help. So I agreed without much thought (as always, getting myself into hot soup most of the time!), and before I knew it, I was face-to-face with a bubbly Xiao Jun, waiting to see great results from me. Great. And just two weeks later, at SMT, Si Ming spoke to us regarding Metamorphosis, of the great things that happened to him, and how we would be transformed just by the very witnessing of the body of Christ gathering together.

I began to think: could I plan for Metamorphosis’ publicity with an unwilling heart for attendance? Was I unwilling to go for the first, and probably last, Metamorphosis camp I’d ever be able to attend? Most importantly, the transformation that Si Ming was talking about, was I not yearning for it?

I went back that night thinking whether I was won over by Si Ming’s oratorical skills, or was it really the yearning to learn God’s plan for me through Metamorphosis that swayed my resolve to absent myself from this year-end Metamorphosis.

And dear Crusaders, I’ve only but one thing to tell you as to why I’ve decided to go for Metamorphosis – more than the fun, more than the fellowship, more so than it’s a Crusade event, I just feel that God is calling me to just give it a shot.

And every time that God has called, He has never failed. Each and every single time I feel compelled and pushed, dragged from the abyss of my comfort zone into the madness of what I call activeness, I learn great things. They may be personal things, things I’ve never imagined myself learning, things about other people, or even things about God.

But regardless, I feel myself transforming – in retrospect, every single challenge that has been posed to me, has done nothing but to make me grow more in Christ, to grow more like Christ.

Perhaps I’m making a mountain out of a molehill, perhaps you’re wondering what I want to get out of this – but this isn’t an advertisement, and this isn’t publicity.

It’s just a personal message from me, to tell all of you that if you haven’t thought of going for Metamorphosis, do give it some thought, because all has been planned and put together so that you may experience a transformation in your student life.

And that’s it, why I want to go for Metamorphosis: I want to be transformed. =)

His Power Made Perfect in Our Weaknesses

By Sze Yin

For the past half a semester, I’ve been very busy trying to cope with the increasing workloads in my studies and many commitments in church and crusade. It will never be possible if I were doing all this by my own strength, but I thank God for His strength and wisdom in guiding me through every task that I’m doing.

No doubt, there are still times when I struggled between trusting God and relying on my own strength. It is only when I come to a point when I felt completely helpless and powerless to do the things that I need to do that I can’t help but can only look to God for strength. For Paul, it is when he is weak, that he sees the power of Christ moving in his life. And similarly, for me, it is in my weakness that I see the grace of God which is more than enough for me.

If anyone is feeling weak and helpless, do always remember that God’s grace is sufficient for you and His power is made perfect in your weakness. For when you are weak, then you are strong. Continue to trust in the Lord, who will never cease to strengthen you with His unlimited power!

(2 Corinthians 12:9-10) But He said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ's sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

Being a Serving Community

By Abigail Yong

Last Tuesday, we gathered together to learn more about being a serving community, both for God and for others. As the worship leader for that LM, I had been struggling to cope with the extra responsibility in addition to my usual heavy workload. However, after hearing Sharon’s message, I realised that in being a worship leader, and indeed in all tasks that we do, we should do it all for the glory of God and to serve the community and ultimately God, not ourselves. This lesson from the LM is certainly something to encourage us, especially when we become disillusioned or start thinking of God’s work as a burden.

As Jesus Christ said in Matthew 25, “I was hungry, and you fed me. I was thirsty, and you gave me a drink. I was a stranger, and you invited me into your home. I was naked, and you gave me clothing. I was sick, and you cared for me. I was in prison, and you visited me.” Then we will say, “When did we do any of that? We never saw you.” But Jesus will say, “When you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were doing it to me. To serve others is to serve God. Is that not what we were put on Earth for?

LM Prayer Reflections

By Sophia Lim

I helped out at the prayer booth which focused on prayer for the world. Through the preparation process as well as other segments of LM, I saw my own lack of prayer for the world and how narrow my prayers often are. Most of the times, we focus only on our own supplications; we often get so caught up in our own troubles that we fail to see the great needs of the world. I think prayer LM has adjusted my perspectives. Though prayer LM is merely a one-off event, I hope it has shown us that prayer needs are countless; we, as prayer warriors, should see the importance of prayer and continuously intercede for our school, our ministries and the world.

CORS Bidding Week

By Ye Chen'en

Looking back on CORS bidding week, I'm really thankful for what God has done. Preparation was not easy, we had to call up non-Christian freshmen from the contacts we collected during Matric and invite them. It was a challenge to me, something I've not done before. But God provided the courage needed.

Many seniors and freshmen came on the actual day itself. Many friendships were forged with these non-Christians through a simple helping event. These friendships will provide us with the platform to share the gospel with them. As I went through the names, compiling them into an Excel sheet, I was amazed at how God brings people to us. Nearly half of the people who came were not those that were contacted by the E-comm, but are bought along by their friends. God gave us students whom we had missed during Matric!

Do pray for them, as we start to reach out to them, and to share the gospel with them.

Vision Tea 2009: Prayer Update

Dear Crusaders,

Vision Tea 2009 is getting nearer and nearer! As the Vision Tea committee is preparing and planning this exciting time of food, games, fellowship and the Word, God is good. We have several things to thank for:
  • Programme and the flow of events are more or less settled.
  • Publicity, logistics and administrative preparations are on track.
Here is also some prayer pointers:
  • DGs will actively volunteer to prepare a dish from the given selection since it is going to be a potluck.
  • Welcome Gift preparation.
  • For enough ushers and two suitable candidates for emcees.
  • Decorations for LT25 and the booth showcasing what Crusade is all about.
  • Freshmen SMs will take initiative to bring their new charges to the booth.
  • Suitable script for a play.
  • Good attendance.

Vision Tea 2009: What's OUT is IN - Join the IN crowd, stand OUT for Jesus!

Hey Crusaders,

The "Vision Tea" is just round the corner! Join us for an action-packed time of food, games and fellowship as we welcome the freshmen and catch up with each other after a long and refreshing summer's break!

Details:
Date: 12 August 2009, Wednesday
Time: 6-8pm (Doors open at 6pm)
Venue: LT25 (Just opposite the Science Club)

This year's theme "What's OUT is IN - Join the IN crowd, stand OUT for Jesus!" focuses on the how awesome it is to live out our Christian faith boldly, no matter where we are, recognising God's purpose for us in a world that so desperately needs Him. We've taken this central theme from two key passages in the Bible:

Esther 4:12-14

When Esther's words were reported to Mordecai, he sent back this answer: "Do not think that because you are in the king's house, you alone of all the Jews will escape. For if you remain silent at this time, relief and deliverance for the Jews will arise from another place, but you and your father's family will perish. And who knows but that you have come to royal position for such a time as this?"

1 Peter 2:9

"But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God (our identity in Christ), that you may declare the praises of him (what we are called to do) who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light."

Get ready for an exciting and engaging time with our speaker, Joanna, as she shares scripture from Daniel on how he lived fearlessly for God despite all the temptations and tribulations surrounding him.

As the Vision Tea committee prepares and plans, we'd like to establish a prayer partnership with the entire science crusade community to seek God's leading in certain areas. It is our hearts' desire that everybody, especially the freshmen, will experience the Lord's touch in a very real and tangible way and be greatly encouraged to make a difference for Him.
Here are some important prayer pointers for the event's current stage of inception:
  • The publicity of the event, that we can reach as many as possible and the receptiveness of the Crusaders.
  • Our faith target of approximately 125 people. 30% of 250 freshmen contacts at the matriculation fair (that's about 75 freshmen). At least 50 Crusade seniors from the combined year 2, 3 and 4s. Of course we'd love for everybody to come down to warmly welcome and bless the freshmen!
  • Smooth preparation for details such as the overall programme, logistics, refreshments, decorations, the display booth and the provision of sufficient finances.
  • For the provision of sufficient manpower (emcees, worship leaders, ushers, etc).
So kickstart your school year with a rejuvenating encounter with The Most High and come on down to the place where it's all happening! Be there or be square!

In His Love,
Vision Tea Committee 2009

P.S. As a committee, we will be keeping you notified of our progress and the various matters which require prayer. Thank you and we truly appreciate your time, devotion and of course your heart-felt prayers. God bless.

The Joy We Shared

By Wong Le Jing

All the food we had.

4th of July was picnic day. That morning, many crusaders prepared food to feed all the hungry people coming. The picnic was pot luck style. Food made with love! By 1 pm, all of us were thanking God for the great weather we had for the day. It was cloudy and slightly windy, perfect for a picnic. We reached botanic gardens and sat near the 'money' tree. For those that do not know, the big tree is affectionately called the 'money' tree because its the tree that appears at the back of our five dollar note. With about 20 plus crusaders, we spared no time laying out the mats and placing all our food at middle. After a little introduction in a circle, Terence took time on behalf of everyone to thank the people who prepared the food for us. We gave grace and ate the food before us! After the food, Shi Wei led us in a time of thanksgiving and worship. Echoing what Terence said, what sets us apart from other social gatherings is that we have God in our midst.

Worship.

After the worship, we moved out of the mat to play some ultimate frisbee. Botanic gardens was surprisingly empty, save for a few young families. Many of us also tried in vain to fly kites. Too bad that there was not enough wind, and too many trees! The kites went up for a while, only to come crashing down later. We also were a little fascinated with a few couples taking pretty wedding photos at botanic gardens. Fpur couples I think? After all the running, we sat down in groups to play the guitar, and other games like chomp and bang. It was a great time of fellowshipping and playing together. Before long, we packed up to go for dinner before it turned dark.

Kite flying.

I thank God for the great weather, great food, and great fellowship we had. =)

Reflections for Crusade FOC

By Valerie Koh

The Science Region Year 2 campers with Valerie, second from the left.

Let me start off by saying first that this camp, is the very first Christian camp I have ever attended in my entire life. Furthermore, I don't really like camps (especially overnight ones). So in the midst of my contemplation whether to go or not, Liting approached me and asked if I wanted to take up the role of AGL in the camp. After a day's consideration, I said yes.

And so the camp commenced and I found that I've been blessed with an awesome CGL (Alicia) and a really wonderful CG (CG4!). I've thoroughly enjoyed the times we spent bonding and getting to know each other more during games, meal times and CG time. There were many things I've learnt during CG time where we got together to share our thoughts and reflections on the Message that Casey has shared with us. I discovered that there were things to be learnt from the message that have never crossed my mind before, but have been brought up by others?

I'm not a very sporty and active person, so it was to my surprise that I found myself actually enjoying the games we played while running about campus, tiring as they may be. What I found really meaningful about these games was that each had an objective behind it, something to be learnt and gained at the end of it all.

It has been a really great three days and two nights learning more about God, having fellowship with other Christian friends, worshipping and learning skills (witnessing exercise). I am glad to have left this camp closer to God and richer in friendship.

Tasted the Source

By Fabian Kong

“Do you not know? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom. He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” – Isaiah 40:28-31

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” – Matthew 11:28

Group photo: Over 130 campers who have tasted the source! Have you?

It is my first Crusade FOC and I am thankful that I can go for this one after missing last year’s FOC. I came with tiredness from doing things for my CCAs and doing research for my UROPS. I felt dry throughout this vacation with this business. This camp is like a retreat for me and a time of fellowship with Crusaders from different regions and meeting freshmen. Indeed, the camp has ended with me refreshed from tasting the source of living water (John 4:13-14) and spiritual food.

The passage in John 4 has indeed reminded me of knowing, tasting and sharing the source. This infamous passage of the Samaritan woman tasted the source and shared the source with the rest of the people of Samaria has indeed reminded me of the importance of sharing the Good News to the lost as harvest is plenty but workers are few (Matthew 9:37). What I enjoyed most in this camp is I found the new joy of praise and worship again! I felt the presence of God throughout the camp, especially during worship, refreshing us with His Word (spiritual food) and reminding us of sharing the source (living water) with non-believers.

God has indeed worked amazingly throughout the camp. While I was preparing the video for the finale of the camp with Yong Kiat, we both felt really tired from the day of activities. We decided to have supper first instead of finishing the video editing. After refreshed from the supper, we continued the editing and fellowship despite the ungodly hours. It is amazing how He sustained us throughout the night to finish the video for viewing on the last day of the camp. And thus, the product of the sleepless night:

Vision Trip

Vision Team.

Find out what the Science Crusaders who took part in the local Vision Trip (20-31st May) have learnt!

“I had initially intended to raise full sum of $500 by myself instead of going through with the hassle of support-raising. However, in the end I managed to raise more than the necessary amount, by God's grace and provision. I am once again reminded that God is the One who will provide us with all that we need, from finances to the love we need in reaching out to His people, so that we might do His work.” – James, Graduate

“Through participation in the Southern Cross Project, I witnessed the power of prayer; God indeed heard our prayers and granted us favour with the tour guides after a few unsuccessful tries in distributing the SCP packs. Through this trip I have also leant the realness of God.” – Jennifer, Year 2 Chemistry

“The SCP briefing left a deep impression on me as I learnt that one pack distributed can impact more than one life when brought back home and exposed to friends and family. The video screening on “The Cross” encouraged me as I witnessed the strength of the people’s faith in God even though they were persecuted for their beliefs. I have also learnt to love PRCs and call them my own friends.” – Candice, Year 2 Applied Math

“I saw for myself God’s hand at work in my own country. Through this trip, I have also learnt that quietness and trust is strength. Being on this trip has helped me along my journey of becoming more spiritually mature, and nurturing a greater spiritual fervor in me to do God’s work.” – Hui Qi, Year 3 Chemistry

“I learnt that I am someone in God's sight and He knows what's best for me; His grace is sufficient for me! I may small in my role and responsibility but it is the small bits that make the big piece, the big picture in the family of God.” – Alicia, Year 2 Life Sciences

“Through this vision trip, I feel very humbled by my teammates in terms of prayer, communication in Mandarin etc. I have also learnt to lead and serve by God's grace. My personal objectives for this trip were to experience God’s work in Singapore, and to expand my faith and vision in God. They were met through witnessing ministry in areas other than on our campus and in Singapore.” – Terence, Year 3 Life Sciences

“The video screening of “The Cross” left a deep impression on me, especially when I see the people singing praises unto God with all sincerity. This vision trip has challenged me to work out my faith with fear and trembling instead of merely going through with the motion.” – Grace, Year 3 Life Sciences

“I have learnt countless priceless lessons during the course of this vision trip, both from ministry exposure as well as from my teammates. To summarize them all, I’d say that this trip has helped me to better capture God’s vision and heartbeat for the lost, and has challenged me to do more for God.” – Joanna, Year 2 Life Sciences

“I am very encouraged to see how God worked through each of the students during this vision trip. I have indeed witnessed the goodness of God, and I am trusting God for a revival in NUS.” – Li Ting

“I have witnessed for myself how each of the students has been a leader in his/her small ways through serving the team, and I’m encouraged by that. On a personal level, one of the most impactful lessons I have learnt was when I watched the video on “The Cross”; the images of the Chinese people committing their whole-hearted loyalty to Chairman Mao struck me with the challenge of my own devotion towards Christ.” – Sharon

An Easter Reflection

Story of a Nail
"Don't look down on me just because I seem to be an insignificant nail. I traveled the world and I have seen much in life. The highlight of my life was the day I was taken by a Roman soldier along a dusty road that led to Calvary.

When he took me out of his bag, I saw three men waiting to be crucified. Serve them right, these criminals! But there was something different about the man in the middle. Those weeping women called Him "Messiah". A plaque on the cross read "King of the Jews". So this was no ordinary man. He seemed to be well loved and respected. I hate to see this man die. For once, I wish I wasn't a nail.

A soldier placed me at the wrist of the man in the middle and hammered me in. "Ouch, ouch!" my head hurts.. How self-centered I was. The pain must have been excruciating for Him, but He was silent. As His head turned, I saw those eyes. They were not eyes of anger and hatred, but of love and compassion. I heard Him say, "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing."

There was something I didn't understand. What crime has He committed? "He claimed to be the Son of God," one woman told another. But...to be crucified for that?

Later, I gathered it had to do with what man called "sin". This man had to bear the sins of the world. That sounded pretty heavy. Poor man.

It wasn't long before He breathed His last. Honestly, I was sad to see Him die. If He claimed to be God, and if it is true, surely He can save Himself? Why didn't He come down from the cross? My fellow nails and I secured Him to the cross. But it was love, love for the world that held Him there."

The story of a simple nail triggered much thought about all that Jesus had done. Who drove those nails? Was it the crowd-pleasing Pilate? The religious establishment of the day? Or the dutiful Roman soldiers?

The apostle Peter, in addressing the crowd at Pentecost, said, "...and you, with the help of wicked men, put Him to death by nailing Him to the cross. But God raised Him from the dead, freeing Him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on Him' (Acts 2:22-24, NIV, italics mine).

It was our sins that drove those nails! And it was love, God's love for us that held His Son to the cross.

This Easter, as we ponder on the significance of our Savior's death and resurrection, may we love Him even more. Let us take this opportunity to bring someone into the loving embrace of His nail-scarred hands..

Because He Lives,

Service to God

By Gloria Koh

It was SMAD on 31 March and it was indeed something new to me as this was my first time attending SMAD. Many people put up items to show their appreciation for their SMs and to bless them with little gifts as well. Amongst all the fun and laughter, we haven't forgotten to dwell on God's word. Terence gave a sharing on being chosen to serve God.

Using Po from Kungfu Panda as an example, Terence shared that indeed many of us are not up to God's standard, at that very point when we were chosen, to do God's work as we are very inadequate and sinful. However, we should never forget that nothing is too difficult for God, and that includes moulding a person and equipping him with the right qualities to do the work that God has assigned to him. It was not about whether we are good enough to be chosen by God, but whether we are willing to trust God to help us do His work. One thing that struck me the most was the fact that God chooses the weak and the humble, such that His power and His glory can be clearly shown and manifested in that person's life. Its through our weakness, that God's glory can be visible to the rest of the world.

Let us all stop hesitating to serve God. Let's all take a step of faith and let God transform our lives this very day! =)

LM Experience

By Nigel Ho

I am not exactly the right person to be talking about LM, considering that I had only attended a couple of LMs for this semester. However, I had the privilege of emceeing for one of the LMs, which was LM 6 Missions and Sending. I was touched by the presence of God in the event of emceeing and hearing the message being shared by Ting Ni. As she shared about her experience in East Asia, I just felt encouraged by her faith and boldness to step out of her comfort zone of not knowing how to speak Mandarin and understanding the Chinese words before she went. She gave up her scholarship and ambitions just to obey God and she was rewarded greatly. As the LM was focusing on Missions and Sending, I knew that evangelism and spreading the Good News were the prominent features of Christian living. And if we have experienced abundant love and grace from God, we want to share this good news with others because this love is meant to be enjoyed by everyone! You are saved spiritually so that another person can be saved spiritually through your sharing! (Romans 10:13-15) Besides being encouraged, I was reminded at the same time of my time of seeking God in my future direction after graduation. I asked God to show me the passion of my life. What do I like to do? What gifts have been entrusted to me? What do I see myself doing for the rest of my life? Then I realised something. It isn't the specific calling or passion that is going to play the most important part of obeying God, it's being obedient to whatever God has called us to do in our lives. It's the willingness to say yes to Him that matters, not just a season of our lives when we are at the crossroads and need to make a decision but also in every single thing that He has placed in our lives. May it be in our studies, honoring God, our parents and friends, every word or deed that we say or do, we should work at them with all our hearts, as working for the Lord, not for men, since we know that we will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward (Colossians 3:23). I know that my passion right now is to allow God to unveil His glory to me by obeying Him each day, and I believe He will show me His plans being unfolded each day as I continue to avail myself to Him. I don't want to live a life without knowing what I can do to live abundantly but surely God will not hide Himself from a person who seeks Him. Hence, the question we should perhaps ask ourselves each day is: What is your passion today?

Reflections on LM

By Victoria King

Going back to the days when I was still in Year 1, though I was a regular at LMs, I was mainly there for the worship and sharing. Back then, I was a young Christian, one who was just beginning to take my Christian faith seriously. I grabbed onto every opportunity to learn more about God; worship, the Word and prayer, through DG, LM and church. True, LM plays a big role in building my spiritual knowledge but it also helps in building my spiritual growth - Word + Fellowship. It wasn't till when I was in Year 2 that I begin to see LM in a different light. I began to look forward to LM not just for the knowledge I would gain but for a time of refreshing and enjoying the community of crusaders. It is the time when like minded Christians come together to worship God, to listen and learn from Him and frank sharing among crusaders. So, instead of expecting to receive most of the time, I also wanted to offer and give what I can, be it time to arrange furniture, packing, encouraging or praying for others and so so on. Basically, I shifted from being someone who would arrive on time for LM and disappear right after LM ended to someone who "tries" to be early for LM and go back with the crowd. =) Now in my third year, LM has never fail to be treasured time spent. And it is because I enjoy the learning and fellowship, I would like others to share the same with me, by inviting and encouraging them to come and see for themselves. Being an international student, crusaders have become my second family and LM can be said as like a weekly family gathering for me.. =)

"And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching." - Hebrews 10 : 24-25.

Apologetics: Liar Lunatic Lord

By Chen en

We started LM with an ice-breaker, getting to know the names of everyone who came to LM. It was more than an ice-breaker to me, it was like a family gathering, the warmth and sincerity of everyone present, wanting to know your name and being friends. During E-bites, through a fellow sister's sharing, i learned that we should be obedient to God's calling. Her sharing reminded me of the story of Jonah, who did so much to run away from what God has told him to do. But in the end, in one very simple action, God pulled Jonah back to where he was supposed to be. To me, its a reminder to be obedient, to lean on God for his guidance and strength, whatever efforts to run away will be futile because He is God. He will prepare me with all that i need.

Later, we learned about apologetics, to speak in defense for our faith. It need not be a fierce debate with the other person, all that is needed is just a conversation. Through simple flowchart, we can bring across what we want to say to the person easily and clearly. What I felt that was very helpful were the verses that liting pointed out to us, that can defend that Jesus is not a liar and is not a lunatic as well. This gives me more confidence in defending my faith, as i can now give concrete evidence to people, instead of just saying " by faith lor"!

I went home from LM, feeling lighter and more encouraged. Encouraged by the sharing during E-bites, and knowing how to defend my faith, showing others that we Christians believe with sound faith.

GIG Experience

By Joanna Lim

Chen 'en and I said a prayer before doing DG witnessing together, entrusting God to lead us to the people whose hearts He has prepared. We spotted Chen'en's coursemate, Huimin, studying alone and approached her. I shared the WYS booklet with her, all the while noticing that she was moved by the message brought across to her. She agreed to join Group Investigating God thereafter, and I was willing to avail my time to follow-up on her.

I was really nervous the first time I was preparing GIG, more so when preparing for my first DG, because I had no idea what to expect. I did alot of online research beforehand, to prepare myself for questions she might ask. During our discussion, I was also quite self-conscious in the usage of words, all the while trying to make things sound less "weird" to a person new to the Christian faith. However, I learnt that we actually do not need to be richly endowed with biblical/theological knowledge to lead in a Christianity discovery group, sharing with him/her what you normally do as a Christian (praying to God when you need help, saying grace) is a testimony in itself! Exposure is evangelism! :)

Perhaps the most important lesson I've learnt from this whole experience of evangelism is that not everyone is as apathetic to spiritual issues as we think they might be. It was a full 4 weeks between the time I first met Huimin to the time we met for GIG. During this period, I kept in contact with her, asking about her CAs and how she was coping. She responded quite positively, and seemed enthusiastic about meeting up with me for GIG. On the day we met up, she was actually having a CA later that afternoon, yet she availed herself to come! It showed me that she was keen to find out more, though she was unfamiliar with the faith. There are individuals who are really seeking God, waiting for someone to give them answers, or just waiting for someone to hear their questions. All we have to do on our part as followers of Christ is to go out in faith, asking God to prepare the hearts of the people He'll lead us to, depending on the Holy Spirit to lead (and to calm our nerves! :S) and leaving the results to God.Even though Huimin eventually decided to discontinue the GIG sessions, it does not negate what I've learnt, nor what she has. She stated in her sms to me that the session we had together had "opened her mind" and helped her "understand more". She thanked me and Li Ting for the friendships forged, and agreed to contact me if she ever wished to find out more. I will continue to keep in touch with her, so she'll have one more Christian friend :) I leave the rest in God's hands, prayerfully committing Huimin to His care and allowing Him to work on the seed that has been planted in her heart. :)
